Dec 29, 1977: Woman sues MLB

Female sports reporter wants in locker room

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - Sports Illustrated reporter Melissa Ludtke filed suit against the New York Yankees, American League President Lee McPhail and Commissioner Bowie Kuhn on this date in 1977 for not being allowed to do her job. Ludtke says she was not allowed into the Yankees locker room during the 1977 World Series solely because she is female. She was joined in the lawsuit by TIME, Inc, the owner  of Sports Illustrated.

"If women could not get to the athletes to interview them then editors could not rely at them," Ludtke said.

Ludkte won the lawsuit when the courts ruled female reporters have a 14th Amendment right to pursue a career regardless of their gender.
